Trespassers on the Roof of the World

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Tibet was the last great place on earth to explore.  Known as the rooftop of the world because of the high elevations, Tibet only wanted to be left alone by the rest of the world.  They did not want foreigners to even enter their country and they did not allow Westerners into their capital city of Lhasa.  Yet, intrepid adventurers kept trying to enter the forbidden city of Lhasa.  Time after time, those Westerners were turned back short of their goal. Unfortunately, the Tibetans would not be so successful in keeping the Chinese out of their homeland.  This book is a fascinating read!
