This is a superb novel of ranch life in West Texas in the 1950s. The author, a renowned Western writer, centers the novel around Charlie Flagg, an independent-minded but good-hearted rancher, and his struggles to survive a six-year drought (a drought which actually occurred in the 1950s). There is hardship and humor, romance and heartache. Above all, there is a sense of what life was like for the West Texas rancher. I found it hard to put down.
