Many Christians believe, in theory, that God heals today, but they have never seen God heal and they don’t actually expect God to heal someone. Jack Deere was a Hebrew scholar at Dallas Seminary who held this view. This book tells his personal journey of being surprised by the power of the Spirit and coming to believe that God still does miracles today.
Deere is a first-rate scholar and he gives a superb presentation that the miraculous gifts of the spirit are still in operation today. It would be very difficult to read this book and not come to the same conclusion.
In the final two chapters, Deere eloquently writes that a passionate love for Jesus Christ must be the focus of our spiritual life. It is one of the best things I’ve ever read on loving God.
This book, which I first read in 1998 and recently re-read, is one of the most influential books in my life. If I could have every person in our church read just two or three books, “Surprised by the Power of the Spirit” would be one of those books.
