Blood and Thunder

Hampton Sides has written an epic of the American West, a tale filled with drama and passion, courage and heroism, heartache and tragedy.  Much of the book focuses on the fascinating Kit Carson, a trapper and soldier and scout and mountain man, who epitomized the Wild West of the mid-1800s.

Though the book ranges all over the West, from Missouri to California, the epicenter of the account is Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the clashes between the American soldiers and the Navajo Indians.

If you want to understand the American West, and the clashes between Indians and American soldiers, Sides is a good place to start.
